The Best Accommodations and Places to Stay on Malekula
Finding the perfect place to stay on Malekula LINK#D035 can feel like a puzzle and we're here to help you solve it.
This remarkable island offers accommodation options that range from traditional village stays where you'll wake up to the sound of lapping waves, to more comfortable guesthouses that balance local charm with modern conveniences. The bungalows here are authentic and basic; definitely not for the faint-hearted, so if you're seeking luxury, we'd recommend sticking to Santo or Port Vila. Instead, every option connects you directly with the island's authentic culture and stunning nature.
According to our very own travel manager, Robin, the key to choosing accommodation here isn't just about comfort (though that's important too) β it's about finding a place that enhances your island experience. Whether you're drawn to easy access to Malekula's multi-day hikes or prefer a village homestay on some offshore island where locals become your unofficial tour guides, Malekula delivers something special.
We've personally stayed across the island's best accommodations, so let's get into the best places to stay in Malekula.

Malekula Accommodation in Norsup and Lakatoro
Norsup is home to Malekula's main airport (though the island actually has three airports in total).
Just south of the airport, you'll discover Lakatoro - the island's bustling main hub where you can find essential services and a vibrant local market.
Head a bit further south and you'll reach Litzlitz, where the ferries dock.
These three areas are your best bet for finding accommodation, as they house the highest concentration of what limited lodging options the island offers.

Both villas accommodate up to three guests with one double and one single bed.

Atchin Beach and its village are wonderfully welcoming places where you'll feel right at home. According to locals, this area is also one of your best chances to spot dugongs in their natural habitat, something truly magical if you're lucky enough to witness it.

Located just 30 minutes from Norsup Airport in a quiet village setting, this intimate accommodation places you right on the seafront where crystal-clear, warm waters invite daily swims. The lucky might even spot dugongs swimming past their bungalow windows.

Malekula Accommodation in Lamap and Maskelyne
Tucked away on the remote southern shores of Malekula, Lamap serves as the main village and home to the area's airstrip. Getting here is an adventure in itself; you can either brave the long and gruelling 4WD truck journey from Lakatoro or take the much easier flight option.
Just around Lamap, you'll find Port Sandwich, which has become a popular anchorage spot for yachts cruising through Vanuatu waters. The area is also the best place to catch a local boat to Ambrym if you want to hike these incredible, if not less visitied volcanoes.
Meanwhile, the accommodation providers on nearby Maskelyne Island are more than happy to transport you across the channel to their island paradise. Once there, you'll discover three traditional villages that offer a truly authentic Vanuatu experience, something we personally love about this hidden corner of the archipelago.

3.Malog Bungalows

Get the full Maskelyne experience at Malog Bungalows!
Tucked away in the traditional fishing village of Peskarus on Maskelyne Island, this waterside retreat has been lovingly crafted by two lovely local hosts, Kalo and Nina.
You'll find five simple bungalows built from local materials, each with its own verandah overlooking a shared garden that frames stunning views of the mangrove bay. Four bungalows share facilities, whilst one pampers guests with a private ensuite.
The heart of this place is the central fare area, where guests naturally gather for meals and those lazy afternoon chats that somehow stretch into evening. Better still, Kalo's professional culinary background transforms the large outdoor restaurant into something truly special.
From our experience, you won't find fresher seafood anywhere. We're talking fish caught that morning, succulent lobster, sweet crab and tender octopus, all prepared with the skill that comes from years in the kitchen.
Getting here is half the adventure β you'll fly into Lamap Airport, then enjoy a scenic boat ride that sets the tone for your entire stay. Once you're settled, the coral reef beckons for snorkelling, and we highly recommend the dugong tours.
The property runs on island time with generator-powered electricity from sunset to 9 am, running water throughout, and a cosy bar where you can grab snacks, wine and beer. What we love most is that all activities are organised directly through the bungalows with local guides, creating those personal, culturally rich experiences that connect you deeply to both the land and community.
